About me

Who I am

Borys Szumański — psycholog i psychoterapeuta, Poznań

I am a psychologist, psychotherapist and psychoanalyst. I also offer couples therapy. I work with adolescents and adults — including people who have come to Poland from abroad and are looking for a therapist they can talk to in English. I offer sessions at my office in the centre of Poznań as well as online.

I graduated in Psychology from the Faculty of Psychology and Cognitive Science, and completed Interdisciplinary Doctoral Studies at the Faculty of Polish and Classical Philology, both at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. I specialise in clinical and cross-cultural psychology. At the University I run Intercultural Training for international students facing the difficulties of adaptation and acculturation — which is why, in my practice, I pay close attention to what it means to encounter difference: a new language, a new place, a new culture, and at times a new version of oneself.

I am a psychoanalyst of the Lacanian orientation, training with the Warsaw Circle of the New Lacanian School, and a psychotherapist in training at the Wielkopolska Society for Systemic Therapy. I bring my clinical work to regular supervision.

How I work

Psychological consultation

A psychological consultation based on current psychological knowledge. It often takes the form of an assessment, consultation, or professional guidance. This meeting serves as a point of orientation, during which we explore possible directions for further work, discuss available approaches, and consider the most appropriate ways of achieving your goals.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is a series of conversation-based sessions centred on the difficulties you bring to the sessions. Its aim is to establish a safe relationship and conditions fostering long-lasting change. I work within the systemic approach, which means that together we look not only at the problem itself, but also the context in which it has emerged and continues to exist. Together, we address the issue by drawing on personal resources, relationships, and recurring patterns within the systems of which you are a part—such as your family, intimate relationship, or professional environment.

Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis is not psychotherapy, although it can lead to profound change and yield therapeutic effects. It is the art of listening and speaking, in which the aim is to grasp what lies in the unconscious and what repeats itself in the analysand's experience. It is the most personal form of encountering oneself in the presence of an-Other. Analytic sessions are conducted in an atmosphere of respect for the uniqueness and singularity of each case — they offer the opportunity to address the specific nature of individual suffering, which often eludes contemporary clinical practice.

Couples therapy

Couples therapy consists of joint sessions with both partners and the therapist. Its aim is to improve communication, foster a deeper understanding of one another, and develop more effective ways of dealing with difficulties. The work includes both support during times of crisis and the exploration of recurring relational patterns that may contribute to conflict or hinder the development of a satisfying relationship.
